The only thing that would give me a lot of anxiety would be trying to do a long road trip in this. I would worry about being stuck at one of Iowa's few charging areas for a long time.

I’ve driven an EV from Florida, through Texas, Arizona, Nebraska, and have taken several trips around Iowa. In our home state, there are convenience and grocery stores with charging. And it’s often doesn’t take more time to charge than it does to grab a sandwich and use the restroom. Range anxiety is the biggest obstacle to buying one, but I’m here to tell ya: you can do this!

We bought a 2023 Mach-E GT just one day before the $7,500 rebate deadline last year. The very next day, we embarked on an epic journey from Des Moines to Seattle, down the scenic West Coast, and back—all without any prior experience in an EV. Our first adventure was, to say the least, a wild ride. However, within a few days, we became pros at finding chargers.

My path to the Mach-E GT started years earlier with a 350 HP, 6-speed AWD Focus RS we imported from Germany. That car was a true gem—thrilling to drive, though I found the Recaro seats a bit too snug. Eventually, I traded it for an F-150 Platinum, which, despite its luxury, I rarely drove due to its 12 MPG fuel consumption.

As the rebate deadline approached, the pressure was on. I mustered the courage to ask my wife ONE MORE TIME about ordering the GT. Her condition? She got to pick the color. She said yes, and we now proudly own a Cyber Orange GT that stands out in any parking lot!

Initially, my wife was intimidated by the car, but after a few months, I finally convinced her to get behind the wheel. Now, it's our go-to metro driver and the only car she'll drive. Our monthly spend on it is a mere $15 or so—talk about efficient!

Your going to love your GT as much as we love ours. Every smile you make won’t be the last.

I've always loved the classic Mustang, but never had one. I can't afford the EVs. I drive a Ford Focus Hatchback- very much my style. I only wish they'd go back to making them again before I need another car.

Glad to see more Ford people here. My sisters always make fun of mine saying that Ford stands for "Found On The Road Dead." Ha ha

OMG the story of your father got me!!!! I hope all the dads read this and instill a love for cars with their daughters like yours. It is such a special bond. I know mine did, and to his dying day we were making car deals and talking cars (we are a bow tie family though, of course!). Thanks for sharing

I'm pretty sure I saw people testing driving those in Michigan even 4 years ago. Is that possible? Congratulations on your purchase! I'm jealous.

Your memory is good. I test drove the vehicle in 2021. Crazy about this car. Realize I forgot to mention that the seats have incredible lower back support. What are you driving?

A 2020 Ford Escape Hybrid. It's not sexy but still getting great gas milage. I am not sure I could do an EV since I make frequent trips to North Carolina. What is your range?

I hear great things about the Escape hybrid from owners. We'll count on ~300 miles of range per charge. (But you don't drive it to 0, as you know.) I find that it's easy to charge up at lunch and a break time. An EV owners who reached to me drives from Central CA up into Oregon regularly. This story I wrote about a cross-country trip was really interesting -- https://www.freep.com/story/money/cars/ford/2021/03/09/2021-ford-mustang-mach-e-reviews-owners/4636946001/
