Thank you for this information. It’s always good to have facts and statistics to back up subjective conclusions. Of course, have to matter to the person o e is conversing with!
Here in Port Huron, I have participated in ‘Support our Canadian Neighbors’ rallies twice in the last month. There were nearly 200 people with signs and flags of both countries on our side of the Blue Water Bridge and Canadians likewise rallying on their side. I completely understand their anger and the fear generated by the inane threats issued by Trump. I wait in disbelief as the republican sides of the aisle in both houses of Congress remain silent while our friend and ally is being so unfairly treated. I wish I could share some pictures from these two events.
In the midst of those FACTS, he holds a rally in Warren, Mi last week that was packed. Trying to figure that out is like trying to explain why a heroine addict with a brain occupied by worms is our Health czar. Bulletin: U can’t.
Thanks for bringing that out now. Very timely…. For citizens who care.
Phoebe, thanks for exposing the impact one person’s brash disrespectful attitude can have on a local economy that had nothing to do with it. I don’t blame our long standing ally neighbors for feeling miffed, but hope for normal business flow once this foolery blows over.
Trump knows that every minute spent discussing his insane, asinine plan to annex Canada is one less minute spent focussing on his corrupt tariff shakedown schemes. Better to talk about annexing Canada than his extortion of the countries of the world, selling off the United States and political favors for his own profit. He doesn't want us to know he has made more than two billion dollars so far with his corrupt crypto schemes.
Protest Trump and Musk all you want, but this insanity is fueled by your MAGA friends, neighbors and co-workers--the guy who is losing his job, his business or his wife is being deported, but he still supports Trump. Without the continued support of MAGA, Trump would have been impeached, convicted and removed from office weeks ago.
So many deportation stories include testimonials from family members who voted for the program. A national Schadenfreude has created a bizarre environment in the U.S. Our country lacks the unity that Canada displays.
Port Huron is in Michigan’s CD9, home of Rep. Lisa McClain, Republican, whose over-the-top, undying support of Donald Trump becomes more reprehensible every day. McClain’s stories of dangerous criminals crossing the Southern border (maybe some; more likely women and children and families seeking a better way) and her support for drastic, inhumane immigration policy do a huge injustice to the diplomacy that places like the Sarnia, Ontario/Port Huron, Michigan have exemplified for several centuries. COVID was hard enough in our border towns; now we have the disease that is tRump.
Note: Lisa McClain won re-election with 66.8% of the vote. Her Democratic challenger, real estate agent Clint St. Mosely, ran a tireless campaign. McClain has not yet held a constituent event in 2025. This is what voters seem to want.
Appreciate your very informative article. Prior to the Trump tariffs going live, there was a national news report about a small US town up near Vancouver that depended heavily on Canadian citizen commerce transitions, something like +95%, and the folks were basically terrified knowing they would lose their livelihood if Canadians decided not to cross the border to purchase their household products. Personally, I was considering attending the ZZ Top concert at Caesars Windsor in June, but will take a pass because I'm highly reluctant to drive my vehicle through this traditionally American friendly town. Thanks Phoebe-
Canadians have consistently said they appreciate American visitors. I think you should attend your ZZ Top concert in Windsor. And while you're there, stop at O'Maggio's Kildare House for incredible fish and chips. Best Halibut ever.

I'm going to Canada in three weeks and am curious about the reception I'll receive.
Canadians are incredibly grateful for visitors and the dollars you bring to their economy.
Thank you for the local perspective.
Every little town in America matters.
I was inspired to pull the data and do the story after I overheard a restaurant manager talking about lost business. She declined to be interviewed.

Turnout at the events you mention exceeded expectations, partly because (I think) they were about love for Canada, which is a non-partisan issue.

The actions of our health czar leave me with more questions than answers.

I plan to monitor economic impacts closely.
