Not to make light if the situation but this part reminds me of that scene in "Stand By Me": "a bunch of us were barfing our guts out. Some of the Coast Guard people were barfing their guts out, too, probably from seeing us"
Many offshore races require that each crew member carry a device which will automatically send a personal man overboard (MOB) signal via AIS (Automatic Identification System) . When activated, the device broadcasts location of the device/MOB (as well as speed and course). The CG and nearby vessels can them more easily locate the MOB.
Many such devices can be integrated into (auto) inflatable PFD's (personal flotation devices) so they go off automatically when PFD inflates.
Thank you for your excellent report on this near tragedy. Grateful to US Coast Guard and any others who assisted in the rescue of my niece and her for Canadian mates.
Thanks for another great article. So glad everyone is safe.

It was awful and hilarious and awful. I simply can’t fathom the stress. (Nice “Stand By Me” reference.)

Ain't technology grand?
Grateful for your thoughtful input. Thank you, Brad.
Incredible reporting.

Oh how horrifying. I didn't know there were life jackets equipped with GPS technology now. Thank God.
I feel bad for anyone who loses their wedding rings but it was a very smart decision not to go back for them. Not worth risking your life over.
Did they not have a life raft?
Some boats carry life rafts, many do not.
Well, things have changed. Rafts used to be required, now they are recommended.
A ton of safety gear required just not a life raft.
What does Tim Prophit mean when he said “We had a full back down last night."???
Knockdown. It appears to have been a typo. Fixed. Thanks so much, Mark.
