When Jef and I moved to Huntington Woods from Lansing almost 16 years ago, we toyed with the idea of moving into Detroit itself. But emergency response times were terrible, and we just couldn’t bring ourselves to be urban pioneers.
Kwame turned out to be a huge disappointment, and then the whole bankruptcy thing. We couldn’t figure out why Mike Duggan wanted to take on the challenge.
I’m glad he did. There’s still a lot of room for improvement in the city, but it’s night and day from 2010.
Michigan would never let you go, but if it was possible,I’d be forever grateful for you to relocate to Iowa. You and the IWC could create a media platform that would win every Pulitzer, every year.
Duggan possesses the proper experience, skills and abilities to effectively function in a “toxic partisan” MI Capitol complex. We can only hope the voters realize this by November… good to hear he’s touring our wonderful state getting exposure. Great article and interview subjects Phoebe!

As long as our country is being turned upside down and inside out, how about the two parties stop deciding who can run and who the rest of us can vote for? If they're so worried about what would happen, then they should put out a better product instead of stifling everyone else's.
This will be a campaign! It will be revealing if Dems stick to their “Vote for Duggan and you’ll get John James” framing. It is a great time for candidates to advocate policies that address major issues (education, infrastructure, economy) and demonstrate how they will bring us together to improve. Michigan needs day-to-day gumption; who’s got it?
Again and again, analysts tell me Mike Duggan is a frontrunner. Jocelyn Benson is widely regarded as an excellent secretary of state but hasn't yet proven her strength on the campaign trail.
Could Mr. Duggan change the way we think about elections in our country? There has been endless chatter about a 3rd party choice. This might be the kick start this movement needs.
The national press will be watching this race closely. A savvy national political analyst/former consultant wrote me that he believes Mike Duggan is the frontrunner. He's a unicorn.
